AOLÉON: THE MARTIAN GIRL (Part Four: Illegal Aliens), by Brent LeVasseur

Phobos sat alone in her cell. In the dark corner, she watched a Martian rock rodent scurry about. She fed it a piece of her dinner.

“The food is pretty bad, eh my little friend?” Phobos said, talking to the tiny rodent whose bulbous body jiggled as it ate. The rodent gazed up at her with bulging

Phobos’s cell was spartan and empty. There was no furniture whatsoever. Not even a bed to lie on. But, it was clean. Phobos sat hunched and cross-legged on the hard floor with her back against the wall. In front of her, a force field barrier blocked the only exit to the hallway. To her right, another force field separated her cell from the one next to it. In that cell, sat another prisoner whom she could hear breathing and occasionally mumbling to himself, but she could not see him. Across the hallway, but also out of view, sat Deimos.

Part four of the series gets better and better, and so action-packed. Lots of fun in this one too! All Aoléon books are illustrated by its author, Brent LeVasseur. Here are my previous reviews of parts one through three:
  1. Part One: First Contact
  2. Part Two: The Luminess of Mars
  3. Part Three: The Hollow Moon
Here's a quick recap of the characters. Gilbert Sullivan lives in a farm in Nebraska and got into a bit trouble with his neighbor Old Farmer Neville Johnson when tracking down a strange phenomenon, which turns out to be Aoléon. Aoléon the Martian Girl is a strange-looking yet beautiful girl with huge blue eyes and turquoise skin.  When both were discovered by old Farmer Johnson, they were mistaken as vandals, and Aoléon escaped with Gilbert in her spacecraft. This marks the beginning of their adventures in Mars together.

What do you think is the evil Luminon up to now?

In part four, the duo with Bizwat's help is plotting the rescue of Aoléon's parents and is about to embark on a near-suicidal mission into the Xiocrom detention area. To do that, they will need to prepare very well. Meanwhile, the evil Luminon has started on the invasion of Terra (Earth). Gilbert's parents see their cows being abducted right before their eyes! In part three, we found out that the Luminon's evil plan is to sabotage the process of galactmilk production at Galactworks and invade Terra, Gilbert's planet Earth and steal the cows.

The journey Aoléon and her friends (Gilbert, Bizwat, Helios, and Zoot) embark on in their plan to rescue her parents and planet Earth

Here are some of my favorite quotes or moments from the book...

When Bizwat the "pizza delivery guy" talks about his values of being a soldier: "Being a soldier is not about blindly following orders, it is following orders in the service of a higher cause. When that cause is betrayed, we are no longer soldiers, just mindless drones dying for the wrong reasons."

When Aoléon explains to Gilbert in the Martian dessert about what is it like to have a telepathic bond with someone. "It is like music. Sound without association creates harmony that resonates within you. It connects you to another, almost by some miracle, and in so doing, it gets through to your heart…and two hearts become one."

There are definitely lots of fun action moments, contemplative moments, and definitely sci-fi moments. I am bracing myself for part five!

Book Synopses: Aoleon and Gilbert have become the Luminon’s top priority in stopping the Martian resistance movement, and after being chased by the Royal Paladin Guard, they are forced to flee the Martian Megalopolis. Aoléon, Gilbert and Zoot escape with the help of Bizwat and his newly found friend, Helios, a first generation soldierbot.

After their saucer is destroyed, they crash land somewhere in the deep Martian desert, and they set out to locate Kyrios and the secret base where Aoleon’s parents are being held captive.

After battling the forces of nature, starvation, a Klyklon dust storm, (and not to mention a giant slor that almost swallows them alive), they finally make it to their destination. However, after Kyrios gives Gilbert some basic training to develop his budding psionic power, they learn that their journey is far from over.

Will Aoléon, Glbert, Bizwat, Helios, and Zoot be able to rescue Aoleon’s parents and stop the Martian invasion of Earth in time?
