Friday Firsts: Isolation

Here's the rules of the meme:
  • Grab the book you are currently reading and open to the first page.
  • Write down the first sentence in the first paragraph.
  • Create a blog post with this information. (Make sure to include the title & author of the book you are using. Even an ISBN helps!)
  • Did this first sentence help draw you into the story? Why or why not?

Isolation

First sentence: It was the sort of summer night that made a young woman abandon her fears and jump into the lake with barely anything on.

The first sentence helped draw me into the story because it made me curious. And the book tells me that it happened in the woods, nineteen years ago. As I read more, I discovered that she's being watched by an unknown person, waiting to make his move. Something's about to happen. Fast forward to the present, a family moves into a new house in a rather isolated area and one with too many secrets. It's exciting at first, but quickly becomes horrifying. I think this place is linked by the two periods of time (nineteen years ago and the present).

  1. Good first sentence, but it feels happier than the book sounds.

  2. Yeah, Carol is right. That first sentence reminds me of when I was young and would do just about anything, including jumping in a lake nekked! Still, I love horrifying. Bring on the review!

  5. Hi Carol, it is supposed to be a happy thing. The author didn't elaborate what happened though because something else happened to the person doing the watching...

Hi Sandy! I like horrifying too. I'll try to breeze through the book as fast as I can manage. Review coming up soon. :D

Hi Viv, glad you thought so too.

    Thanks, Melody!

  6. That is a great first sentence. I don't do horror, so I'm not sure I'd read the book, but I will read your review!

  7. I don't have a desire to join, but here's a first sentence from a book I loved:

"There is no lake at Camp Green Lake."

Holes, by Louis Sachar. An amazing read if you like books with mystery with a delicate touch of a-link-to-the-past, just like that book you're reading, no horror sadly.

  10. Thanks, Beth! I don't usually do horror as well but decided to give it a go recently. :)

Afif! What are you doing online? You should be studying. LOL! There's no lake at a place named with lake in it? Hmm... Thanks for sharing the first line! I'll take note of the book. It has an interesting title as well.

    Thanks, Naida!

Hi Stacy, you're most welcome! I'm looking forward to reading his new book GHOSTWRITER.
