Prologue, First Sentence: Victoria Gardella Grantworth de Lacy, Dowager Marchioness of Rockley, had a problem--and for once, it didn't have to do with vampires.

This is Colleen Gleason's FINAL book of the Gardella Vampire Chronicles, and I am saddened that the series has come to a conclusion! I enjoyed As Shadows Fade very much and wished that it has not ended, but all good things must come to an end. So I have accepted that fact. . .

In this last book, Victoria the Illa Gardella, leader of the Venators (hunters of the undead) continues to be torn between Maximillian Pesaro and Sebastian Vioget. Both are powerful men and extremely charming in their own ways. She loves them both, but who would she choose? How would her heart decide? Max, appears to be indifferent to her and continues to 'pass' her to Sebastian. Sebastian, on the other hand, continues to shower her with affection. Victoria is the last of direct descendent from the very first vampire hunter in the Gardella family, and she must continue that lineage so that humanity continues to be protected from the vampires. Lilith, the vampire queen, is still very much in power.

The vampires have left London and their last known location is Prague. Meanwhile, a different kind of evil is brewing and the demons--the fallen angels--more powerful than ever before, have found their way to earth through a portal. Even Wayren, the ageless woman and very important to the Venators, falls prey to the demons. Her identity (a mystery in the past four books) is also revealed in this story. To defeat these demons, the Venators would need to cooperate with Lilith (horror of horrors!) for she possesses something that the Venators needed. No surprise here: The price for that 'trade' is Max for Lilith has never gotten over her obsession with Max.

In this final installment, Max makes an important decision. And so does Sebastian. I really enjoyed the twist in the plot and it was so suspenseful. It is so action-packed I just had to keep turning the pages. I really cannot reveal more than I should for the benefit of readers who have yet to read the earlier installments. I recommend this 'unusual' vampire series!
