Shelter Home 2009 Calendar (AND, Great Buddy Award)

A few days ago, I was awarded the Great Buddy Award by Rachel of Heart of Rachel. It was a sweet surprise and knowing that there is someone out there who considers me a great buddy is really heartening. Thank you so much, Rachel! I'm giving this award back to you, and also to...

2009 is fast approaching and I'm sure you would need a new calendar or two to usher in the new year. When I was at church last two Sundays, a young boy approached me and asked if I'd like to buy a desktop calendar. The boy is helping Shelter Home for Children to sell them in support of its fund raising project. I bought one. Now, I'm thinking of buying a few more to give away to friends as gifts, AND at the same time, support Shelter Home.

Only RM8 per calendar The calendar's artists are from the Da Vinci Creative Kids. Each month features beautiful drawings by kids aged 4 to 14.

The calendar also prints stories of the young victims (names changed to protect the identities of the victims and their families) such as the following:

GROWING STRONG. Terry's father was a violent alcoholic who often beat up his mother. Terry's mother was the sole breadwinner for the family of five, struggling to make ends meet. The father never appreciated his wife and often cursed her and the children. Terry's mother finally gathered the courage to place her children in Shelter with the hope for a better future for them. Terry is now studying in a vocational school and has been pursuing a course in mechanics for a year.

THE ANGEL AND THE BAD MAN. Sheila was left in front of the gates of Shelter Home when she was 3 years old with no identification documents at all. Marks and bruises found on her body showed that there had been physical abuse before. Initially, Sheila was afraid and confused most of the time, and she refused to socialize with the staff and children in the home. Recently, she is slowly learning to open up by making many new friends in Shelter.

This is a drawing by Yee Yan Yi who is 6 years old. She said, "These are my friends. We are happy together."

I would like to borrow and dedicate this drawing to all my friends, including my blogger buddies. I AM happy having you as my friend, and please know that all of you have impacted my life in so many ways. Thank you so very much!

Do buy one or more of this calendar and help support Shelter Home. You can also help them in so many other ways (child sponsorship, expense sponsorship, contributions, donations, volunteering, etc). Find out how. God bless you!

  5. Thank you so much, dear Alice. I'm also so glad to have you as a friend. For the longest time I'd see you commenting at Melody's and Rhinoa's, yet I hadn't "met" you myself. I'm so glad I finally did. I love your photography, your passion for animals, how friendly and welcoming you are, and of course, your love of books. Thank you for sharing so much with us.

  7. Thank you so much, Alice! I'm so glad to have you as a friend too! The calendar is lovely! It always saddened me to know there're children who're being abused everyday... they're so young and innocent, they should be well protected and loved.
