Booking Through Thursday: Peer Pressure

I'm making a comeback for Booking Through Thursday! I stopped participating a few months back because of study commitment but with that out of the way I am once again free to play.

Suggested by JM:

I was looking through books yesterday at the shops and saw all the Twilight books, which I know basically nothing about. What I do know is that I’m beginning to feel like I’m the *only* person who knows nothing about them.

Despite being almost broke and trying to save money, I almost bought the expensive book (Australian book prices are often completely nutty) just because I felt the need to be ‘up’ on what everyone else was reading.

Have you ever felt pressured to read something because ‘everyone else’ was reading it? Have you ever given in and read the book(s) in question or do you resist? If you are a reviewer, etc, do you feel it’s your duty to keep up on current trends?

I am guilty of succumbing to book temptation but not so much due to peer pressure. For example, how to resist reading Breaking Dawn when it's hot off the printing oven? I raced through it to the end. It's a juicy book - totally satisfying. And then, there are so many great reviews out there by fellow bloggers and booklovers that look really, REALLY good. I am tempted to buy them immediately but often I decide to be sensible and patient. I don't normally buy hardcovers unless I'm desperate to read them immediately. Otherwise, I usually wait for the mass paperbacks. By that time, months would have passed while others have read them. I know it's not possible for me to buy everything that I want although that's a lovely thought. Imagine owning all the books I desire. Blissful!

I am not a professional reviewer - just someone who loves reading and loves books. I don't keep up with the trends but will blog or review just about anything that catches my fancy, fiction or nonfiction.
