No target for me, please

Some friends asked if I set target to the number of books I read per week or have I reach my target for the week. The answer is NO I don’t set any target although I do pick out books that I plan to read for the month – you can see that list on the sidebar of my blog.

I read for pleasure and since I read quite fast, I need to have ‘stock’ around so that I don’t have to wait before I start another book. I also need to have a variety of genre available in my personal library, be it fiction (romance, mystery, thriller, so on and so forth) or non-fiction (business, spiritual, memoir, self-development, etc.). What I choose to read pretty much follows my mood. You could say that I’m a moody person, and I can be quite fickle-minded. So yes, that could mean I decide not to read what I pick out for that particular month, but one thing I know I am consistent in is I read no matter what. Perhaps you would then say I did not achieve my target for the month. But sod it with the target. Reading is pleasurable and it should not be a burden. One’s worth as a reader is not determined by the number of books one has read in a particular week, month, year or decade.

In summary, I don’t read x books a week just to make up a number. And yes, I do ponder what I read as I write thoughts in my reading journal, book reviews on my blog, not forgetting the doodles and dog-earing on the pages of my beloved books. Lastly, my wish list is getting longer at a phenomenal speed, and the TBR pile growing taller by the day and standing proud. For those recommendations, I have my blog buddies to thank for. You people rock!

  1. I share the same thoughts, Alice. No quota, no pressure, no nothing for me but reading pleasure. :)

  2. I never used to set any kind of target for my reading until last year when I started blogging. I started doing reading challenges and set myself the task of reasing 50 books in 2007 which I thought was impossible. I ended up reading 103 I think and have decided to try and read 100 again this year. As I have signed up for a million and one reading challenges this is the first time I have had to sit and make a list of everything I hope to read this year and break it down into months. I can move things around as long as they get read at some point. It's been an interesting experience but I don't think I will do it every year. Like you I read for fun and I want to always keep it fun and never make it a chore and a rush to finish lists.

  3. Hi Melody, glad we share the same thoughts! Cheers to our reading journey! :)

Hi Rhinoa, I must admit that my reading got more intense when I started blogging. Like you, I participated in various reading challenges and still do now. I am also aiming to read at least 100 books this year (that's a target!) but there's no pressure to 'perform'.

    Reading is fun!

  4. Hi, Alice! I am like you in that I do not have a target I aim for each week when it comes to reading.

  5. I don't have a target too. If I had set a target, then I'll be pressured to meet it! Don't really want to make reading too stressful...
