I took the plunge!

I have decided to go for the humble Nikon DSLR D40 instead of D80. In view that there isn’t much difference between those two cameras (by the way, you can buy two D40s for the price of one D80), I have decided to settle for a D40 and throw in some extras such as the SB400 speedlight and 18-200mm lens. I’ve used it (with the 18-55mm lens) during the recent company event in Genting Highlands and loved it!

The D40:

  • Uses the same sensor as the D80 – same technology
  • Is much more sensitive to light
  • Has flash sync speed of 1/500 second vs. the D80 1/250 second (makes huge difference when shooting with flash)
  • Has the same flash as the D80 – which is why I also ordered the SB400 speedlight to produce great indoor photos which bounce off direct flash that tends to wash out colours
  • Comes with the great 18-55mm lens that is light-weight; the camera with the lens mounted is still light and makes shooting a breeze
  • Has the same LCD as the D80

With the purchase, I get a 2GB memory card, a tripod, screen protector, and a bag. Not too bad a deal! The only thing outstanding now is to collect them this Friday. AND to persuade my ‘hot date’ to lunch at the shopping mall where the camera is sold so that I can collect my darling!

  4. Hi Steve, I really think it's a good investment and you definitely can buy with 0% interest. In fact, it's a smart thing to do, IMHO. :)

Same here, my to-be-read pile is mounting and I'm trying to clear them as fast as I can...

You take great photos too. I like the action-packed water sports one. How did you take those shots?

  5. You know so much more about this that I do. I'm one of those "point and click" kind of gals, but sometimes I do feel a need for something I can tweak a little more. It would be a big learning curve foe me, though!

  6. Hi Barbara, I was once a point-and-click kinda gal too and still am. It's really quite simple once you get the hang of it and I'm sure you will. I say, give it a shot and you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you can do. :D

P/S: I'm still dabbling with this thing and so much I don't know about...

  8. alice, definitely will use the 0% thingee, the same way i did for A710IS plus the underwater housing.

There are 2 sets of white water rafting photos - one taken by me, the other taken by the river guide. the action one taken by the guide using Olympus, i think u can see the different. A710IS has richer colour. The single kayak is taken by me. i was using sport mode, if i am not mistaken.

  9. Hi Steve, do let me know if you're getting it. I've got mine today. Went to fetch the leng chai (my camera) with a friend.

Definitely can see the difference. Heheee... Great stuff! One of these days maybe can go photoshoot together. ;)

  11. Thanks, Rachel! I hope to take great pics with it. Since I'm involved as a photographer in the upcoming Sports Day for my church on May 1, I'll get a good test drive. :)

  12. That's a beautiful camera, Alice. I'd be so out of my league with one like that. I'm a simple aim and click type gal, I'm afraid. LOL

  13. Simple is great, Wendy. Really. I still keep my aim and click camera - easier to carry around when I'm not doing anything heavy duty.
