Meme: Non-fiction all the way

Hi Gautami,

You started a great non-fiction meme! Thanks for tagging me. Non-fiction is something that's close to my heart so, here's what I have for you:

What issues/topic interests you most--non-fiction, i.e, cooking, knitting, stitching, there are infinite topics that has nothing to do with novels?
My main collection is business and personal development books. I have some on photography. The 4-tier shelves you see here are homes to those books. The one with greeting cards on top of it contains all my Christian titles. I also have a collection of yoga and pilates books.

Would you like to review books concerning those?
I only started reviewing some of the books I read in 2006 but not before that. Here's the link.

Would you like to be paid or do it as interest or hobby? Tell reasons for what ever you choose.
It's more like a hobby at the moment. I love reading at my own pace and be able to 'own the book' i.e. jotting down my thoughts, doodling on it, colour-code it, and a host of other stuff I do to it. I do read quite fast though. Getting paid for doing reviews would be cool and I don't mind one bit.

Would you recommend those to your friends and how?
I would definitely recommend those to my friends. I have a habit of reviewing only the books I like. If I happen to cross path with some really, truly horrible ones (in my humble opinion), I review them too. I lend them my copy when they wish to borrow but the sad situation is this: I seldom get my books back. It's sad when I look at my list of lending and never see those titles again. Non-fiction books are not cheap but it's not the money. It's the principle of returning what you borrowed. And sometimes the condition of the book returned was not how it was when it was first lent out. I take great pride in keeping my books in top condition (they look like new despite the 'owning'). I'm wary now but I do still lend them.

Besides lending, I buy them as gifts and pass them on to my friends. These are usually must-read titles such as Brian Tracy's Goal!.

If you have already done something like this, link it to your post.
Here's my non-fiction link.

Please don't forget to link back here or whoever tags you.

  3. I will be posting my responses to this meme probably tomorrow. :-)

I have similar problems when I loan out books sometimes. I wish people had more respect for other people's property. If I borrowed someone's car I would return it--and in the same condition it was given to me. Maybe even filled up with gas and washed as a thank you. Why can't people treat our books that way? Without the washing, of course. Books don't take too kindly to soap and water.

  5. One thing I learn about you, Alice is that you are a fast reader. Just how long does it take you to finish a book?

Agree with you about lending someone books only to get the books return to you in not the same condition when it was borrowed. Why can't people take care books they borrow in the same manners that they weren't want someone to do to their books. Or even if they don't care about the condition of their books, why can't they respect the owner books that they borrowed?

I'm gonna check your non-fic link in few minute, in the mean time I enjoy reading your answers. Hope you have a good weekend!

  6. Alice, thanks for doing this! I am impressed. You do read a lot of non-fiction. That too and varied topics. I go in for mostly travelogues!

I hate lending my books as I don't get them back in the same condition. I suppose, most of us buy our books feel this way!

  7. Wendy! LOL on book washing. I would've done the same thing too if I borrowed someone's car. :)

You're welcome, Rachel! I can't wait to read both yours and Wendy's answers.

Hi Julia! Well, it depends... if I'm reading an easy romance, it'll take two days tops. I usually read about 2-3 books a week. If it's nonfiction, it's probably about a week but sometimes less. It takes longer because I want to really let the thoughts sink in. :)

Thanks for the tag, Gautami! I'm glad you tagged me on this one. Hehe... I definitely feel the same way.

  11. My favorite non-fiction books have always been books about crafts, especially when I was younger. Now it's books about movies, especially animated ones and certain biographies.

  12. Enjoyed your post, Alice. :) I'm skeptical about lending books out, and I mostly will lend books to friends/coworkers whom I know can be trusted.

  13. Thanks for playing, Barbara! You have an interesting list of nonfictions. :)

Jaimie, will hop over your bloggie when I'm at home. Of course I thought of you... hehe...

Good girl, Julia! Hahaha! Reading My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk has taken me the whole week. I hope to finish it in the next two days. ;-)

Hey Jen, books on crafts and movies are interesting. I love good autobiographies.

Thanks, Melody. The discovery of who is trustworth comes after some time... Before that, I'd get burned first. LOL. I know Cmate is a good borrower. She always return my book as promised and in tip top condition.
