Marley & Me

Marley & Me made me laugh out loud one moment, sobbing the next. Written in a highly conversational style and is utterly easy to read, you will not regret digging this one. No problem following the story at all. I managed to effortlessly block out all noise and distraction and it seems that Marley was all that there is to me as I devoured the book.

Marley the Dog is a yellow Labrador retriever and a hyperactive, mentally unstable one. John Grogan and his wife, Jenny brought him home when he was a puppy. He is everything but even-tempered, calm and obedient. Even though he annoys the Grogans big time with his incessant chewing and other destructive behaviours, he is a sweet and affectionate canine. He even got kicked out of obedience school! Through all of these, Marley remains unfazed. But still, the Grogans love him to bits.

There are happy moments, sad moments, and hilarious moments. Moments when I wanted to give Marley a good kick on his haunches as I read about the 'wonderful' things he did. There are parts that made me just want to give that big boy a hug and never let go.

Marley & Me is a lovely tribute by John Grogan to the lab retriever. The human owners and the dog share lots of poignant moments together. There are ups and downs. Towards the end, when Marley approaches the end of his long and well-lived canine life, I cried all the way to the airport (hubby and I were on our way to pick up my sister-in-law who’s arrived from London). This book is a gem. Animal lover or not, I believe you will love the story. But I’m sure the former would enjoy it even more.
